Kelvin Askew, born in the small town of Sulphur Springs, Texas, and moved to San Diego, California at the age of three. He always knew he wanted to join the Navy, because growing up, he watched movies like “Top Gun” and “Robotech.” These movies had a lot to do with his choice to join the military. His junior year of high school he was on the front page of “USA Today” and following the article, he received many calls from a Navy Recruiter. The recruiter told him “You are the type of person we need in our Navy.”

In 2001, when the 9/11 attack occurred, he was assigned to one of the first units to be on the first strike. In 2011, he played a part in the success of finding Osama Bin Laden. Today Kelvin is an 05 / Commander. Commander Askew says that if he had a chance to stand in front of young adults, he would say, “Never be afraid to fail and always keep the “three D’s” in mind, when doing anything in life; desire, discipline, and dedication.
